We get lots of questions about what its like to join our gym. Based off of your most common questions, we decided to answer then for you ahead of time.
1. What is a CrossFit class?
CrossFit class Is a 1 hour group fitness class that involves both strength and conditioning. Our coaches will teach you and explain in detail a variety of strength movements, from squats to deadlifts to more complex movements such as split jerks. We will also put you through a high speed cardio/conditioning workout combining movements such as burpees, light barbell movements, running and more. How you modify certain movements will be determined to your physical fitness and capabilities, so you can push yourself as much as you want, you are in control of your workout. Some days are short and intense, other days are long and more aerobic. The variety of training is the key!
2. What is LiteFit?
LiteFit is a structured 1 hour cardio bootcamp-style class that combines functional movements with some traditional bodybuilding movements to make a fun, fast paced class. Be ready to sweat and push hard, without having to think as much!
3. How much is it?
Before you look at the cost, consider its value. This is not simply a membership where you pay for access. This is training, coaching, community and leadership. Our service delivery is intentional and directed specifically at facilitating the best results in the fastest, safest manner. From our predetermined class programming, designed to get you as fit as possible in a short a period as possible, to our professional coaching, you will be getting unparallelled value for the cost. 4. Am I fit enough? Am I too old?
This is a common question. All training at our Cristini Athletics locations are designed for any age at any fitness level. We have grandmothers aged 60+ participating in our CrossFit classes alongside 20-year-old athletes. While they might not be going as heavy, fast, or performing as complex movements, they are still moving at a pace and intensity that is challenging to them, therefore getting the same relative workout. Any level of fitness and any age are welcome to train, all that matters is that you are willing to work hard and have fun!
5. Chance of injury?
Similar to any group fitness class, personal training, sport, hobby or physical activity in general, there is a minor risk of injury. If you perform movements incorrectly, don’t listen to the coach, or choose to ignore previous existing injuries or not bring them to your coach’s attention, then the risk of injury is greater. The program is designed to be a progressive fitness program that builds you up over time. Gym mistakes such as attempting to lift heavy weight that you’re not accustomed to or are inexperienced with (“I used to lift this much in my college days!”), or attempting to perform highly complex movements without the necessary flexibility/mobility as a foundation, increase the likelihood of injury. This is why our coaches are highly adamant on enforcing progressive adaptation, and will take the necessary steps to ensure you are challenging yourself within the parameters of your capability so the risk of injury is negligible. Take your time, let your fitness be a long term journey and don’t rush. Let your strength build slowly along with your technique. When your coach tells you it’s too heavy or to slow down, LISTEN TO THEM! Likewise, if you have major flexibility issues, start addressing them. Our coaches and physiotherapists are here to help you with that. Ask us questions and you will get help!
6. How many people in a class?
Each class is different, depending on day and time. On average, a class is between 10-15 people. Sometimes it’s as few as 3 and sometimes as much as 25. But do keep in mind, if there are 15 people in class, likely 10 of them are long time members and have a good understanding of what they are doing. The coach will still be able to give you the appropriate amount of attention you will need in each class!
7. But I don’t know what I am doing!
Perfect. We don’t expect you to know anything! None of us had any idea of what we were doing when we first started. You are not alone. We are here as coaches to always teach and explain every movement in every class. You will be taught each class what version of the expected movements you will be doing that day. Slowly and gradually, week after week, the coaches will progress you into harder and more complex versions of the movements as we see that you are improving with the training.
8. Do I get a trial?
Yes! Everyone gets a free trial class and an assessment with one of our coaches. We want you to get a taste of the class system as well as get to know you. We want to know what your goals are, what issues you have and how we can help you. We want you to be as comfortable as possible and have a good understanding of how the classes and training will work!
9. I have a bulged disk/torn meniscus/ bad shoulder etc?
You are not alone! A lot of people come to us with previous injuries or issues. We as coaches are here to help you modify all movements to allow you to improve on your injuries and weaknesses, while simultaneously enhancing your quality of life.
